Boli ki Bolti Band

| Rup J PATER |
ITANAGAR, Aug 26: Ladies, next time you open your mouth to make your Boli…think twice. The bars of poverty are better than those of the police lock-up!
Hadn’t it been for former journalist T T Tara, who brought to the ground the flourishing game of Boli, which was published by this daily, the ‘gamble’ would have continued discreetly gripping in its vice several poor women vis-à-vis their male counterparts.
Widespread concern emanating from various ‘right-thinking’ citizens (including victim husbands) has ultimately forced the Capital district administration to put the lids over the contagious game of gambling aptly called the Boli.
In an order issued today under the seal of Capital District Magistrate, deputy commissioner Padmini Singla officially banned playing, conducting or propagating Boli in any form across the state capital with immediate effect. The capital Police has been especially directed to maintain vigil and ensure that the ‘game’ is not conducted or played within the capital jurisdiction and book anybody found violating the order under appropriate provisions of law.
Singla had earlier on August 17 issued a show cause to organizers of Boli as to why action should not be initiated against them for ‘disintegrating the societal structure and system’.
In her order today, while not divulging the identities of the ‘organizers’, Singla stated that in reply to the show cause notice it was submitted that ‘players’ enter into the ‘game’ on their own will and they get a big sum of money at one go to solve their education, medical, employment and other economic problems. The ‘organizers’ supposedly even claimed that several women have started their own small business enterprises by investing the money received from Boli. However, they failed to substantiate their claims with documentary evidence.
Singla, herself a woman, observed that the ‘game’, played particularly by women and for women, is disturbing the social fabric and causing conflicts in families as innocent and poor women once into the ‘game’ gets trapped eternally that may lead to broken families and even suicide.
Ultimately, its Boli ki Bolti Band… hopefully! But many ‘experts’ feel that the ‘game’ cannot end as there would be heavy losers with heavier stakes if that happens.
